BASEBALL STARTS SEASON OFF WITH VICTORY, DOWNING DREW UNIVERSITY 5-3

The Lehman College baseball team (1-0 Overall, 0-0 CUNYAC) got their season started off on the right foot on Tuesday, defeating the Drew University Rangers in a non-conference game by a score of 5-3 in Madison, NJ.

 

Francisco Sanchez got the start and the victory for Lehman College, as hurled 6.1 innings and allowed just two runs (one earned) while scattering seven hits, walking three batters, hitting three batters and striking out seven. Arturo Lazaro Jr. pitched the final 2.2 innings and performed well, allowing just one run (earned) while giving up two hits, walking one and striking out two batters.

 

Will Van Houten got the start for the Rangers and received a no decision. He pitched the first four innings and allowed two runs (both earned) while allowing four hits and striking out three batters. Doug Veterano took the loss for Drew University as he entered the game in the top of the fifth inning with the contest tied 2-2 and he would allow a pair of runs as Lightning veteran Amadoernesto Guzman who record a two-RBI double with the bases loaded and nobody out, driving home Bobby Villante and Jhon Comas Disla and putting Lehman College ahead 4-2. The Lightning would tack on another run in the following inning, taking a 5-2 lead and never looking back from there.

 

Offensively for Lehman College in the victory, Guzman finished the afternoon 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, a run scored, and two runs batted in. Comas Disla singled twice and went 2-for-4 with a run scored, and Raul Cordero finished his day 2-for-4 with a run scored. The Lightning recorded 11 hits on the afternoon. Lehman College head coach John Foster – skippering in his first game for the Lightning – gave his thoughts after the win.

 

“It was great to see finally be able to play some baseball after the weather had been so uncooperative recently,” Foster said. “Our guys were really ready to play and I feel as though we played a nice, collective game this afternoon. It's a nice way to start the season, and we're all looking forward to the home opener on Thursday.”

 

Despite the loss for Drew University, it was Matthew McGrath finishing the contest 3-for-4 with a homerun, a pair of doubles, three runs scored, and a run batted in. Peter Tuchol went 2-for-4 on the afternoon with a double.

 

The Lightning will play their first home game on Thursday evening as Lehman College will take on SUNY Old Westbury at the South Field, with game-time scheduled for 5:00pm in the Bronx.
