The Lehman College baseball team (3-3 Overall, 0-0 CUNYAC) split a pair of exciting non-conference games on Sunday afternoon, falling to Emerson College by a score of 7-4 in game one before defeating the Lions 10-9 in the second game at the South Field in the Bronx.
In game one of the afternoon, Lehman College starter Francisco Sanchez struggled early, allowing the first three batters he faced to reach base before surrendering a grand slam homerun to the Lions' George Lopes. That gave Emerson an early 4-0 advantage, and the team never looked back in picking up the three-run victory. Peter Karl picked up the win for the Lions, hurling a complete-game by working seven innings and allowing just four runs (all earned) on seven hits while walking two and striking out a pair. Sanchez took the loss for the Lightning, allowing seven earned runs in seven innings of work while allowing seven hits, walking five, and striking out six.
Offensively for Emerson College, Lopes finished game one 1-for-3 with a grand slam, two runs scored, four runs batted in, and a walk. In addition to Karl's terrific performance on the mound, he also picked up a double and scored two runs, and Nick Vennochi and Peter Maltzan picked up two singles apiece.
Despite the Lightning's game one loss, it was Jhon Comas Disla continuing his early-season tear, finishing the game 2-for-4 with a homerun, a double, a run scored, and two runs batted in. Angel Ramos finished 1-for-3 with a single, a run scored, a walk and stolen base.
In the second game of the afternoon, the Lightning took an early lead off of starter Lions starter Jeff Kolb, as in the bottom of the first inning with two runners on base and one man retired, Lightning veteran Amadoernesto Guzman launched a pitch well beyond the left field fence for a three-run homer, putting Lehman ahead 3-0. After Lightning starter Jeremy Perez gave a run back in the top of the second inning, Lehman would plate a fourth run in the bottom half of the frame thanks to a sacrifice fly from Ramos. After two innings of play, the Lightning led 4-1.
Lehman College would eventually hold a 9-6 in the top of the seventh inning. Veteran Alberto Alicea was on for the Lightning needing just one final out to help his team earn a split of the doubleheader, but with two runners on base and two men out, Lehman centerfielder Jeremy Lopez dropped a routine fly ball off the bat of Emerson's Lopes, allowing two runs to score while Lopes scooted into second base. With the score 9-8 in favor of the home team, the next batter to step to the plate was Maltzan, and he would record an RBI single to tie the game.
The contest would remain tied 9-9 until the bottom of the tenth inning when with runners on first and third and one out, Matthew Arvelo hit a ball into shallow left field that Karl would chase after and eventually drop, allowing Comas Disla to score the winning run as the Lightning pulled out a thrilling 10-9 win.
Alicea got the victory in relief for the Lightning, as he pitched 3.1 innings and allowed three unearned runs while allowing just two hits. Lightning starter Jeremy Perez struggled, allowing three earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out one batter in 2.1 innings. Kolb started for the Lions and he was tagged for eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits while walking two batters and striking out one. Zak Levine took the loss by allowing a run in the bottom of the tenth inning.
Offensively for Lehman in game two, Guzman finished 2-for-3 with a homerun, two runs scored, four runs batted in, and a walk. Disla went 4-for-5 with two doubles, two stolen bases, three runs scored, and a run batted in, and Ramos picked up two hits, including a double, while also scoring three runs, knocking in a run, and walking once. For the Lions, Maltzan, Vennochi, and Garcia each recorded two hits in a losing effort.
The Lightning will return to action Wednesday evening as Lehman College will battle SUNY Purchase in a non-conference game, with start-time scheduled for 6:00pm at the South Field.
