The Lehman College baseball team (3-5 Overall, 0-0 CUNYAC) dropped a non-conference match on Thursday afternoon, falling to the Briarcliffe College Seahawks by a score of 20-0 at the South Field in the Bronx in a seven-inning affair due to the mercy rule.
Right hander David Gaffney got the start for the Lightning and took the loss, tossing just 1.1 innings and allowing 12 runs (five earned) on six hits while walking three batters. The Lehman newcomer was also victimized by five Lightning errors behind him. The Seahawks' Lee Ranta started the game and picked up the victory as he was almost perfect, hurling five innings and allowing no hits while walking two batters and striking out nine.
Briarcliffe College scored eight first inning runs, tacked on four more in the second inning, and four more in the third to take a 16-0 lead after three innings of action. The Seahawks would never look back in cruising to victory. Sam Braverman led the way for his club, finishing the afternoon 2-for-2 with a homerun, four runs scored, a run batted in and two walks. Tim Coglietta went 3-for-5 on the day with a double, three runs scored, and two runs batted in, and Reggie Smith picked up a pair of hits, including a double, while scoring a run and driving in five.
The Lightning managed just a pair of hits on the afternoon – singles from Angel Ramos and Matthew Arvelo. Jhon Comas Disla, Amadoernesto Guzman, and Dennison Jimenez all drew walks. Following the loss, head coach John Foster gave his thoughts.
“We struggled in all aspects today, but we have to refocus and get ready for the weekend because it is a crucial weekend for us,” Foster said. “We have the College of Staten Island for three games, and we know how good they can be. I'm confident that our guys will be ready.”
The Lightning will next host the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island in a CUNYAC doubleheader at the South Field in the Bronx. The first game is scheduled for 12:00pm.
