LEHMAN BASEBALL EDGED BY COLLEGE OF STATEN ISLAND IN PAIR OF CUNYAC CONTESTS

Game 1 Box Score
Game 2 Box Score

The Lehman College baseball team (3-7 Overall, 0-2 CUNYAC) dropped a pair of conference games on Saturday afternoon to the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island (10-5 Overall, 2-0 CUNYAC) by scores of 7-0 and 3-1 at the South Field in the Bronx. The games served as the CUNY conference openers for both clubs.

Staten Island's Pat Gale pitched the first game and picked up the victory, shutting down the Lightning with a seven-inning complete game, not allowing a run and scattering just two hits while walking four batters and striking out 10. Lehman's Francisco Sanchez got the nod and picked up the loss, allowing seven runs (five earned) on 11 hits while walking three and striking out five in 6.1 innings pitched. Denis Schwuchow hurled the final 0.2 innings and didn't allow a run while giving up one hit and walking one.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when the Dolphins finally broke through for a pair of runs thanks to a two-RBI double by Joe Cassano which scored Gale and Tom DiPietro. CSI wouldn't look back from there, plating two more runs in the top of the sixth inning and three insurance runs in the top of the seventh to account for the seven-run victory. Offensively for Staten Island in the win, DiPietro finished 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, a run batted in, and a walk, and Cassano was 1-for-4 with a crucial double, two runs batted in, and a walk.

Despite the loss for the Lightning in game one, it was Matthew Arvelo hitting a double and finishing 1-for-3 for the game, and standout shortstop Jhon Comas Disla went 1-for-2 with a single and a walk.

In the second game of the day, both starting pitchers were dominant, but it was the Dolphins doing a little bit more at the dish in grabbing the victory. CSI's Paul Ciccazzo started and got the win, hurling a complete-game seven-inning four hitter, allowing just one run (earned) while walking one batter and striking out seven. At one point, he retired 12 straight Lightning batters between the third and seventh innings. Brian Cubero pitched a strong game for Lehman in taking the loss, tossing a complete game and allowing three runs (all earned) on seven hits while walking four batters and striking out eight.

At the dish for CSI in game two, Henry Roman doubled, scored a run, drove a run in, and walked twice in the victory, and Gale added a single while finishing 1-for-3 while picking up an RBI and walking once. Steve Hession singled twice in the victory as well. Despite the loss for the Lightning in game two, Bobby Villante went 1-for-3 with a double, and Angel Ramos went 1-for-3 with a single while scoring Lehman's lone run.

The Lightning and Dolphins complete this three-game set tomorrow afternoon at the CSI Baseball Complex in Staten Island. First-pitch for the single game is scheduled for noon.
