PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's volleyball team won its season opener on Tuesday evening, winning at Purchase College, 3-2. Set scores were 21-25, 25-19, 25-9, 23-25, 15-7. In the process, the Lightning presented first-year head coach Elvis Rodriguez with a win in his first game.
Purchase (0-1) got on the board first, earning a hard-fought 25-21 margin in the opening set. With the Panthers riding high after the first set win, Lehman regrouped and came out clicking in the second set. Lehman went on a run late, capturing a 25-19 win. The Lightning parlayed that performance into a commanding 25-9 third-set win.
Purchase responded with a much improved set in the fourth, battling in another see-saw set and pushing the match to a deciding fifth set, 25-23.
In the final frame, Lehman held Purchase to no kills, claiming the 15-7 win.
The Lightning look to build on the five-set thriller, and will travel to Yeshiva on Sunday, January 27, facing the hosts and Washington Adventist.
