Men's Volleyball Settles For Split at CUNYAC Multi-Match

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's volleyball team split two matches at the CUNY Athletic Conference Multi-Match, held on the campus of John Jay College, on Saturday morning. The Lightning fell short to York in a hard-fought match that took all five sets to determine the winner. Lehman bounced back to earn a win over Brooklyn College in straight sets. 

In the match against York, set scores were 25-23, 17-25, 25-17, 20-25, and 15-10. The Lightning were able to tie the match twice, but the Cardinals took the rubber set to secure the victory.

Junior outside hitter Jaleel Lino (Punta Gorda, Belize/Toledo Community College) led the way with 22 kills and four digs.  Freshman setter Emmanuel Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./Alfred E. Smith) was an outstanding playmaker as he tallied 46 assists. Classmate Roberto Ventura Diaz (New York, N.Y./Cardenal Sancha) executed 10 kills, while senior opposite hitter Miguel Gallardo (Bronx, N.Y./Salesian) helped Lehman's defense by executing 13 digs. Freshman libero Jose Bautista (Bronx, N.Y./H.S. of World Cultures) added 10 digs of his own. Senior middle blocker Ahmad Abugharbieh (Amman, Jordan/Ittihad) and Diaz had four block assists and one solo block each, while junior middle blocker Ramon Jimenez (New York, N.Y./George Washington) had two service aces.

Later in the morning, the Lightning cruised past Brooklyn College to earn their first conference victory of the season. Set scores were 25-12, 25-19, and 25-13. Diaz led the way for the Lightning with 10 kills and five digs. Ortiz continued his productive afternoon by tallying a team-high 24 assists, producing three service aces, and recording five digs. Freshman opposite hitter Carlos Segura (Bronx, N.Y./Marble Hill) slammed home seven kills to go along with seven digs and four service aces. Bautista anchored the defense with 14 digs, while senior middle blocker Ahmad Abugharbieh (Amman, Jordan/Ittihad) chipped in on offense with five kills.

The Lightning will hit the road to battle Purchase College, on Tuesday. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
