The Lehman College men's basketball team (1-4 Overall, 0-0 CUNYAC) picked up their first victory of the 2009-2010 campaign on Tuesday evening as the Lightning defeated the Warriors of Vaughn College (3-4 Overall) by a score of 80-48 in non-conference action at the APEX Center. Lehman will now get six days off before returning to action.
In the victory, the Lightning were led by standout point guard Xavier Garvin who scored a game-high 17 points to go along with seven rebounds, six assists, and six steals in what may have been one of the guard's best all-around performances of his career. Newcomer Perry Daniel added 13 points and four boards and Jonathan DeJesus chipped in with 12 points, eight rebounds, three steals and a pair of blocks. Lehman recorded 24 steals on the evening compared to just one for the Warriors, and the Lightning also dished 17 assists to just eight for Vaughn College. Head Coach Steven Schulman was very pleased with his team's effort following the game.
“It was very important for us to grab a victory heading into the conference portion of our schedule,” Schulman said. “We've been working diligently in practices and we finally saw our hard work pay off with a victory, so I'm very happy about that. Now we'll break for Thanksgiving and then get back to work on Saturday as we prepare for CCNY.”
In the loss for Vaughn College, Jihad Caesar had 13 points to go along with 10 rebounds and four assists, while Jerome Chan recorded 18 points and snatched three rebounds. Finally, it was Terence Irby adding seven points and four rebounds in a losing cause.
The Lightning will return to action on Tuesday evening, December 1st as Lehman battles the Beavers of CCNY in a CUNYAC contest, with game-time scheduled for 5:00pm.
