The Lehman College men's basketball team (2-5 Overall, 1-1 CUNYAC) dropped a CUNYAC contest on Thursday evening as the Lightning relinquished a 15-point first half lead to John Jay College (1-4 Overall, 1-1 CUNYAC), as the Bloodhounds defeated Lehman by a score of 69-66 at the Doghouse in New York, NY.
Despite the loss for the Lightning, senior guard Perry Daniel put forth a phenomenal effort as he netted a game-high 22 points to go along with six rebounds and three steals. In addition, it was junior point guard Xavier Garvin dropping in 14 points to go along with six assists and three rebounds, and Jonathan DeJesus, despite fouling out, contributed nine points and 11 rebounds in 22 minutes. The Lightning shot 35.1 percent from the field, but it was their free throw shooting that hurt them on this night as Lehman connected on just six of their 15 attempts from the charity stripe. Following the contest, Head Coach Steven Schulman gave his thoughts on the game.
“We knew coming in that John Jay was going to be fired up because today was homecoming for them, and we knew the place was going to be packed,” Schulman said. “I was pleased with out energy and our focus, but we weren't able to pull through with a victory. We'll work on some things and come out ready to play against St. Joseph's of Brooklyn.
In the victory for the Bloodhounds of John Jay College, three players tallied double-doubles. Firstly, it was Vaughn Mason scoring 14 points and snatching 11 rebounds. Also, Chris Jaeger netted 12 points and grabbed 10 boards, and Daniel Desir netted 12 points while snatching 12 caroms. The Bloodhounds shot 44 percent from the field shot 66 percent from the line (14-21).
The Lightning out-rebounded John Jay by a small margin, 48-45, and Lehman also won the turnover battle, as the Lightning committed 20 miscues compared to 25 for John Jay College. Lehman recorded 10 steals to John Jay's seven, but the Bloodhounds tallied five blocks compared to the Lightning's three.
The Lehman College men's basketball team will return to action Saturday evening as the Lightning will travel to St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn to battle the Bears in a non-conference contest, with game-time scheduled for 6:00pm.
