Box Score
Lehman College standout Xavier Garvin connected on a layup with 5.3 seconds remaining to snap a 70-all tie and the Lightning (4-8 Overall, 1-1 CUNYAC) ended a three-game losing streak and defeated Rutgers-Camden by a score of 73-70 in a non-conference contest played Wednesday afternoon in Camden, New Jersey.
After the teams traded early leads, Lehman took the first-half lead for good at 5-3 and raised its margin to as many as 14 points, 28-14, before settling with a 38-28 halftime lead. Rutgers-Camden, however, went on a 10-point run to open the second half, tying the game at 38-38 on a three-pointer by Joshua Askew and setting the stage for a wild finish which featured six lead changes and two ties.
Garvin, who tied the game at 70-70, collected the winning basket with 5.3 seconds remaining. Dwight Nangle would then steal Rutgers-Camden's inbounds pass and throw it over to Jonathan DeJesus who was fouled. DeJesus would misfire on the first attempt from the charity stripe before knocking down the second one. The Raptors' last-ditch three-point attempt at the buzzer was no good as the Lightning escaped with an impressive victory.
For the Lightning in the victory, Garvin finished with 17 points with four rebounds while DeJesus finished the afternoon with 14 points while snatching six rebounds. Alain Dela Cruz contributed 13 points, nine rebounds, and a pair of steals, and Perry Daniel added 11 points in the victory. Lehman College shot 48.1 percent from the floor (25-52) while Rutgers-Camden connected on 44.6 percent of their attempts (25-56). The Lightning dished 11 assists as a unit compared to six for the Raptors, and Lehman also swatted three shots compared to one for Rutgers-Camden.
Despite the loss for the Raptors, Rutgers-Camden received 17 points and eight steals from Joshua Askew. In addition, Shawn Greene (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) added 14 points, and Chris Clahar added 13 points. Junior forward Kevin Brown had eight points and tied Dela Cruz for game-high rebounding honors with nine.
The Lightning will return to action one week from today as Lehman battles the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island in a CUNYAC contest, with game-time scheduled for 5:00pm.
