ROSARIO'S CONTRIBUTIONS PACE LIGHTNING PAST MAINE-PRESQUE ISLE OWLS AT SOUTH FIELD

Box Score

The Lehman College baseball team (3-7 Overall, 1-1 CUNYAC) picked up a non-conference victory Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Owls of Maine-Presque Isle (4-10 Overall) by a score of 12-3 at the South Field in the Bronx.

In the victory for the Lightning, Lehman was led by the stellar performance of senior Andrew Rosario. Rosario made his first start of the season and picked up the victory (1-0) as he pitched seven brilliant innings, allowing just three runs (all earned) on two hits while walking two batters and striking out eight. His performance at the dish also paced the Lightning offensively as he finished 3-for-5 with two doubles, a triple, two runs scored and two RBI's.

Maine-Presque Isle score first in the game, plating a run in their first turn at-bat thanks to a single and a stolen base by Corey Harding and an RBI single by Brandon Elie. Lehman tied the game in the bottom of the first inning against Owls starter Tyler Delaney when Gilbert Garcia hit a sacrifice fly that scored first-year player Angel Ramos. After one inning of play, the game was tied 1-1.

Following two scoreless innings, the Owls re-took the lead in the top of the fourth inning, 2-1. The Lightning, however, stormed back and took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame thanks to a two-RBI single by Ramos and an error by catcher James Cirell that allowed Ramos to storm home after he had stolen third base. After four inning of play, Lehman led 4-2.

The Lightning put the game essentially away in the bottom of the fifth inning, plating five runs to take a 9-2 lead. The inning was highlighted by a two-RBI triple to left field off the bat of Rosario and an RBI single by senior Emmanuel Vera. The seven run lead would be an advantage that the Lehman would not relinquish.

In addition to Rosario's great day at the dish, Vera finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI's, and Ramos finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI's. Junior Jason Caraballo pitched two innings of relief in closing out Lehman's victory, as he allowed no runs and gave up just one hit while striking out two.

Tyler Delaney took the loss for the Owls, hurling four innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits while walking three and striking out one batter. Offensively for the Owls, Elie finished 1-for-4 with an RBI while DJ Charette reached base twice, singling and being hit by a pitch while also scoring a run.

The Lightning will return to action Saturday afternoon as the team travels to Staten Island to battle the CSI Dolphins in a CUNY conference doubleheader, with the first game scheduled for noon.
