Lehman's Patryk Odedina connected on a tie-breaking jumper with 52 seconds remaining, and that shot ended up being the difference in the game as the Lehman College men's basketball team (5-12 Overall, 2-4 CUNYAC) picked up a much-needed victory on Wednesday evening, defeating the Cougars of Medgar Evers College (8-10 Overall, 2-4 CUNYAC) by a score of 74-69 at the APEX Center in the Bronx.
The Lightning rallied from 14-0 down before eventually scratching back from 12 points down (60-48) with under eight minutes to go in the game to claim the victory. In the win for Lehman College, standout Xavier Garvin put forth a career evening, connecting on 12 of his 19 attempts from the floor and finishing with a game-high 30 points as well as a pair of steals. Perry Daniel added 14 points and eight rebounds, and Jonathan DeJesus posted another double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing 11 caroms in the win. The Lightning shot 41.7 percent from the floor for the night. Head Coach Steven Schulman was very happy about the victory.
“It feels good to get a victory,” Schulman said. “This was a big game for us and I was glad that we showed some fight and battled back the way we did. Hopefully we can feed off of this momentum and grab another win at City College on Saturday.”
Despite the loss for the Cougars of Medgar Evers College, it was Ronald Holloway scored a team-high 24 points to go along with six rebounds. Also, it was Kallai Sharpe adding 16 points, three assists and three rebounds. Jarrel Deare also contributed with 11 points and seven rebounds in a losing cause.
Lehman will return to action on Saturday as the Lightning travel to the City College of New York for a conference contest with the Beavers, with game-time scheduled for 4:00pm.
