MEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO DOLPHINS ON LAYUP AT THE BUZZER BY CSI'S MICHAEL LEDBETTER

Box Score

The Lehman College Men's Basketball team (4-9 Overall, 1-2 CUNYAC) fell to College of Staten Island (5-6 Overall, 2-1 CUNYAC) in a CUNYAC contest by a score of 66-64 Wednesday evening at the APEX Center in the Bronx. Staten Island junior Michael Ledbetter converted on a layup at the buzzer to give the Dolphins the exhilarating victory.

The Lightning battled back in this contest, as Lehman College trailed Staten Island by a score of 40-29 with 18:33 remaining in regulation. The Lightning would scratch and claw their way back, eventually tying the game with 3:23 remaining thanks to a jumper by junior guard Xavier Garvin. 29 seconds later, Lehman's Jonathan DeJesus would convert on a basket to give the Lightning a 61-59 lead – the first advantage Lehman had the entire game. The lead didn't last long as CSI's Christian Montervino would drain a long three-point basket to put his team back in the lead – 62-61 – with 2:23 left.

With the game tied at 64 apiece in the final 15 seconds, Lehman's Alain Dela Cruz was fouled by the Dolphins' Herschel Jenkins, as Dela Cruz headed to the line for a pair of free throws. The veteran would mis-fire on both opportunities, and CSI's Emmanuel Frank would snatch the board and push the ball up the court. He would eventually pull up for a long shot attempt which was off the mark, but the rebound was collected by Ledbetter who then converted on the game-winning basket as time expired. The Dolphin bench then stormed the court as a wild celebration ensued.

Leading the way for the Dolphins in the victory was Montervino as he finished with 18 points (8-14 FG), four rebounds and three assists. Jordan Young recorded 16 points and snatched nine boards, and senior guard Ryan Hennessey netted 15 points and dished four assists and Ledbetter – the game's hero – finished the evening with 16 points and four rebounds. Although The Dolphins lost the turnover battle 23-15, they shot 51 percent  from the floor (26-51) while holding Lehman College to 34.4 percent shooting (21-61).

Despite the loss for the Lightning, Garvin led the way with a game-high 19 points (5-8 FT) while Perry Daniel helped with 15 points and seven rebounds. Also it was DeJesus putting forth another stellar effort, recording 14 points and grabbing 13 rebounds in the game.

The Lightning will return to action on Friday evening as Lehman will battle the Hawks of Hunter College in another CUNYAC contest, with game-time scheduled for 7:15pm.
