The Lehman College men's basketball team (8-17 Overall, 5-8 CUNYAC) finalized its regular season with an 86-54 loss to the Cardinals of York College (19-6 Overall, 12-1 CUNYAC) by a score of 86-54 at the York College Gymnasium in Jamaica, Queens.
Despite the loss for the Lightning, junior Xavier Garvin led the way for his squad with a team-high 14 points while snatching four rebounds and recording a pair of steals. Senior Perry Daniel added 11 points and a pair of steals, and Jonathan DeJesus completed his afternoon with nine points and six rebounds. The Lightning were never able to get anything going offensively, as Lehman connected on just 24.7 percent of its shots for the afternoon (19-77). Following the loss, head coach Steven Schulman gave his thoughts.
“It was a tough task for us this afternoon, taking on a York College team that really cruised through the conference portion of the schedule during the regular season and has really played well in their own building,” Schulman said. “Now, we have some time off before having to head to Brooklyn College to take on the defending champions in the quarterfinals. I think our team will be ready to play on Saturday.”
The Cardinals were led by the dominating performance of Marcel Esonwune who finished the afternoon with 26 points while snatching 18 rebounds and blocking 10 shots. Elijah Evelyn added 23 points and eight rebounds, and Ryan Exum contributed with 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and a pair of steals. York College converted on 46.1 of its attempts from the floor (35-76) and out-rebounded the Lightning by a whopping margin of 66-37.
With the loss, the Lightning are locked into the number seven seed in the upcoming CUNYAC tournament, and Lehman College will battle the Brooklyn College Bearcats in the quarterfinal round of the tournament on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off time is still to-be-announced.
