The Lehman College men's basketball team (8-14 Overall, 5-5 CUNYAC) picked up a much-needed victory, defeating the Bloodhounds of John Jay College (1-20 Overall, 1-9 CUNYAC) in a conference game on Wednesday evening by a score of 71-59 at the APEX Center in the Bronx.
In the victory for the Lightning junior sensation Xavier Garvin scored 22 points (8-8 FT) while grabbing four rebounds, dishing four assists and tallying three steals. Perry Daniel also contributed with 22 points on eight-of-13 shooting while grabbing six rebounds, and sophmore forward Jonathan DeJesus posted a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds in the win for the Lightning. Following the win, head coach Steven Schulman gave his thoughts.
“I felt like our team came out ready to play tonight,” Schulman said. “We needed this victory for our confidence, and we found a way to get it done behind our home crowd. Hopefully we can build off of this momentum and go into Hunter College on Friday evening feeling good about ourselves.”
Despite the loss for the Bloodhounds, Vaughn Mason put forth an incredible effort for his team, posting a double-double with 20 points and 23 rebounds. Freshman forward Darryl Dennis netted 16 points, grabbed six steals and dished four assists while Daniel Desir netted 10 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.
The Lightning took advantage of their opportunities at the charity stripe, connecting on 17 of their 23 attempts from the line for the evening while the Bloodhounds were only able to connect on six of their 12 attempts. The Lightning for also won the turnover battle, committing 18 miscues to the Bloodhounds' 23. John Jay held a slight edge in the rebounding department, snatching 45 rebounds to Lehman's 42.
The Lehman College men's basketball team returns to action on Friday evening as the Lightning will battle the Hawks of Hunter College in a CUNYAC contest, with game-time scheduled for 7:00pm.
