BLOODHOUNDS WIN 12-6 SLUGFEST OVER LIGHTNING AT SOUTH FIELD AT LEHMAN

Box Score

The Lehman College baseball team (3-9 Overall, 0-4 CUNYAC) dropped a CUNYAC contest on Friday afternoon, falling to the Bloodhounds of John Jay College by a score of 12-6 at the South Field in the Bronx.

Getting the victory for the Bloodhounds was hurler Chris Camacho as he toughed it out, allowing six runs (all earned) while giving up 15 hits, walking one batter and striking out three. Lehman College pitcher Jason Caraballo pitched 5.2 innings for his club, taking the loss while allowing eight runs (all earned) on eight hits while walking four and striking out five batters.

A game that looked like it may develop into a pitcher's duel ended up being a slugfest by the end of the afternoon. John Jay College led just 3-0 after four and a half innings of play, but the scoring came in bunches after that. The Lightning plated two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning before the Bloodhounds struck back with five in the top of the sixth inning to extend their lead to 8-3. After Lehman got one back in the bottom of the sixth, John Jay kept at it, plating two runs to open up a 10-3 advantage, a lead the Bloodhounds would not relinquish.

Offensively for John Jay in the victory it was leadoff batter Edwin Hernandez putting forth a phenomenal effort as he finished the afternoon 3-for-3, getting on base six times by collecting two doubles, a single, walking twice, and he was also hit by a pitch. He also scored four runs, drove in two runs, and stole a base. Xavier Perez doubled, singled, and finished 2-for-4 while scoring a run, driving in three and walking once, and Wilmer Chavez doubled, collected two hits, drove in two runs and walked.

The story of the day at the dish for the Lightning was Matthew Arvelo, as the senior first baseman went 4-for-5 on the day, singling four times and scoring a run. He was locked in all afternoon long against Camacho. Catcher George Flores finished 3-for-4 with three singles and two runs scored, and Jeremy Lopez singled twice, finished 2-for-3 and stole a base. Finally, it was Angel Ramos going 2-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored, and a run batted in. Following the loss, head coach John Foster had this to say.

“Right now we're just looking for that first conference victory, and we're confident that once we get that under our belts, we'll be off and running,” Foster said of the Lightning who are now 0-4 in CUNY competition with Friday's loss. “We don't have too much time to dwell on this one, as we have a doubleheader with this group tomorrow, so we'll refocus and be ready to come out and take care of business.”

The Lightning and Bloodhounds lock horns tomorrow afternoon in a CUNYAC doubleheader at American Legion Field in Brooklyn, NY, with the first game scheduled to get underway at noon.
