The Lehman College baseball team (4-11 Overall, 1-5 CUNYAC) dropped a non-conference game on Tuesday afternoon, falling to the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University (9-11 Overall, 0-4 NJAC) by a score of 14-5 in a contest played at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Starting and getting the victory for New Jersey City University was Wendell Rodriguez as he hurled six innings and allowed just three runs (all earned) on seven hits while walking two batters, hitting two batters, and striking out three. Jeremy Perez (0-2) struggled in his start for Lehman College, pitching the first four innings and taking the loss as he allowed nine runs (all earned) on 12 hits while walking two batters and striking out one.
The Lightning, trailing 1-0 as the game moved to the top of the second inning, took their first and only lead in the top of the second thanks to a sacrifice fly by Raul Cordero and an RBI single by Miguel Sanchez. At that point, Lehman head a 2-1 advantage. The Gothic Knights would strike back in the bottom of the frame, though, plating six runs on seven hits and taking the lead for good. After two innings of play, the Gothic Knights led the game 7-2, an advantage that would hold up.
Offensively, the Gothic Knights recorded 22 hits on the day, with six players in the lineup recording two hits or more. Ken Witte had a tremendous day for his team as he finished the afternoon 4-for-5 with a triple, a double, a pair of singles, three runs scored, and three runs batted in. In addition, it was Rob Gonzalez going 3-for-5 with a double, two singles, two runs scored, two runs batted in, and two stolen bases. Francisco Ramirez hit a homerun and went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in.
Despite the loss for the Lightning, it was Matthew Arvelo having another great day at the dish as he doubled and singled twice, picking up three hits, walking once, and scoring a run. Sanchez homered and finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and two runs batted in, and Amadoernesto Guzman went 2-for-4 with a double, single, a run scored, and two runs batted in. Having a fine all-around afternoon was standout shortstop Jhon Comas Disla as he reached base three times, singling twice and being hit by a pitch. He also hurled two perfect innings in relief, allowing no runs and two hits while striking out one.
The Lightning will return to action on Wednesday evening as Lehman College welcomes the Bears of St. Joseph's College to the South Field in the Bronx, with the first game scheduled to begin at 5:00pm.
