Box Score
The Lehman College baseball team (3-4 Overall, 0-0 CUNYAC) suffered a non-conference loss on Wednesday evening, falling to the Panthers of SUNY Purchase by a score of 5-3 under the lights at the South Field in the Bronx.
Brian Angelone got the start for the Panthers and received a no-decision as he pitched 4.1 innings and allowed three runs (all earned) on six hits while walking four batters and striking out five. Getting the victory for SUNY Purchase was Albert Baez as he hurled two innings and allowed no runs and just one hit while not issuing a walk and striking out three batters. Jeremy Perez received a no decision for the Lightning, tossing five innings and allowing just two earned runs while giving up six hits, walking one batter and striking out three. Picking up the loss for the Lightning was Francisco Sanchez as he pitched the seventh inning and gave up two earned runs and three hits while striking out one batter.
The Lightning took the lead in the bottom of the first inning off of Angelone when first baseman Matthew Arvelo recorded a two-RBI single, scoring Jhon Comas Disla and Jeremy Lopez. At that point, Lehman College would be up by a score of 2-0. That score would remain the same until the bottom of the third inning when Lehman would tack on another run thanks to an RBI double by Amadoernesto Guzman which scored Angel Ramos. After three innings of play, the Lightning held a 3-0 lead.
Things seemed to be going well for the Lightning until the Panthers would take control of the game from the sixth inning on. In the top of the sixth, Purchase would dent home plate twice against Perez thanks to an RBI double by Dan Stroud and an RBI walk by Joshua Leon. Perez would fail to record an out in the sixth, and in came Brian Cubero to finish off the inning, not allowing a run. After five and a half frames, Lehman held a 3-2 lead.
The Panthers took the lead for good in the top of the seventh inning against Lightning hurler Francisco Sanchez. After Sanchez recorded the first two outs of the inning, it all went south from there, as former Lehman infielder Gil Garcia would hit a double, and Stroud would follow that up with a double, scoring Garcia and tying the game at three apiece. SUNY Purchase then scored the go-ahead and winning run when Austin Groves would record an RBI single, making it 4-3. In the eighth, the Panthers would add an insurance run against Jason Caraballo (the run was unearned), making it 5-3, a deficit the Lightning would not recover from.
Offensively in the win for SUNY Purchase, it was Stroud leading the way with a terrific game as he finished 4-for-5 with a whopping four doubles to go along with a run scored and two runs batted in. Garcia doubled, walked twice and scored twice, and Jared Isaacson finished the evening 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored.
For the Lightning at the dish, it was Arvelo finishing 1-for-4 with a single and two runs batted in, and it was Disla and Lopez picking up two singles apiece. Disla also had a stolen base. Angel Ramos finished the evening 1-for-3 with a single, a run scored, two walks, and two stolen bases.
Lehman College will return to action tomorrow evening as the Lightning will battle Briarcliffe College in a non-conference game at the South Field, with first-pitch scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
