LEHMAN BASEBALL DROPS WELL-PLAYED GAME TO BEAVERS OF CITY COLLEGE OF NY

Box Score

The Lehman College baseball team (5-13 Overall, 1-6 CUNYAC) suffered a hard-fought loss Saturday evening, falling to the Beavers of the City College of New York (9-9 Overall, 2-0 CUNYAC) by a score of 4-3 in a pitcher's duel at the South Field in the Bronx. The Lightning trailed 4-0 after four and a half innings of play and rallied to cut their deficit to a run in the ninth before finally falling short.

Reuben Angeles got the start and the victory for the Beavers, as he hurled a spirited complete game, allowing just three runs (only two earned) while scattering eight hits, walking three batters, and striking out 15. Lehman's Brian Cubero continued his stellar 2010 by pitching his heart out, hurling a complete game and allowing just four runs (three earned) on six hits while walking seven and striking out a whopping 12. He took the loss, however.

CCNY took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Pavel Cruz singled home Derek Faucher. The Beavers would tack on another run in the fourth thanks to a Michael Dominguez double that scored Angeles. At that point, the Beavers held a 2-0 lead. CCNY would add their third and fourth runs in the fifth when Raymie Fernandez doubled home Andrew Romanella, and later that inning, Fernandez would score on an Angel Ramos miscue as Ramos fired a ball home that sailed way over the glove of Amadoernesto Guzman and went to the backstop. After four and a half, CCNY was seemingly in control up 4-0.

The Lightning, however, refused to quit. They got a run back in the bottom of the fifth inning when Ramos would double to start the frame and eventually scored on a wild pitch. That made the score 4-1. Lehman would cut its deficit to 4-2 in the eighth inning when Guzman drilled a double to center field and Jhon Comas Disla motored home. As the game eventually moved to the bottom of the ninth, the Lightning trailed 4-2.

In the bottom of the ninth, Raul Cordero led off with a walk. After Miguel Sanchez and George Flores each struck out, Ramos doubled to right field to score Cordero. Bobby Villante would then walk, and then the game would end when Jeremy Lopez – who fouled off a number of tough pitches – would eventually ground out to first base, as CCNY held on for the win.

Offensively for the Beavers in the victory, it was Michael Dominguez leading the charge as he finished 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a run batted in, and Raymie Fernandez walked three times and also doubled, scored a run, and drove home a run. Andrew Romanella walked three times and stole two bases while denting home plate once.

At the dish for the Lightning despite the loss, Ramos doubled twice while scoring a run and driving home a run and Guzman doubled, finished 2-for-4 and drove in a run. Finally, it was Comas Disla coming through with a double and a single while denting the dish once.

The Lightning return to action Sunday afternoon as the team will play a crucial doubleheader against the Beavers of CCNY at MCU Park (home of the Brooklyn Cyclones), with the first game beginning at noon. Lehman College is currently 1-6 in conference competition, and the team sits fifth in the CUNYAC standings (the top four teams at the end of the season qualify for a playoff berth).
