LEHMAN BASEBALL SUFFERS NON-CONFERENCE LOSS TO FDU-FLORHAM DEVILS

The Lehman College baseball team suffered a non-conference loss to FDU-Florham on Wednesday

afternoon, falling to the Devils by a score of 12-6.

 

Jason Caraballo got the start and hurled a complete game for Lehman College, but he took the loss, hurling eight frames and allowing 12 runs (only six earned) on 14 hits while walking four and striking out seven. Bobby Smith started and got a no-decision for FDU Florham as he tossed two innings and allowed four runs (all earned) on seven hits while walking one and striking out one. Getting the victory for the Devils was Matthew LaTorre as he pitched innings four through seven and he was nearly perfect, allowing no runs on just two hits while walking one and striking out three.

 

Lehman started the scoring by plating two runs in the top of the first inning thanks to an RBI single by Jeremy Lopez that score Bobby Villante and an RBI single by first baseman Matthew Arvelo that brought home Lopez. The Devils struck back with three runs in their half of the first on an RBI triple by Steven Seminerio, an RBI single by sophomore first baseman Matt Joiner and a Lightning error. After one inning of play, the Devils held a 3-2 lead.

 

In the top of the second inning, the Lightning went back ahead, 4-3, but the Devils tied it at four apiece in the bottom of the second thanks to a RBI single from Seminerio. Lehman College would retake the lead in the top of the third inning by scoring two runs thanks to a Miguel Sanchez RBI double that scored Matthew Arvelo and an RBI single by George Flores that brought home Sanchez. In the bottom of the third, the Devils tied the game at six thanks to a two-run homerun by junior outfielder Alex Sariyan.

FDU went up 8-6 in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run by Seminerio and a sacrifice fly by senior designated hitter Joey Santillo. The Devils took a 10-6 advantage in the bottom of the fifth thanks to RBI singles by sophomore second baseman John Pieper and junior outfielder Dan Pregno. FDU closed out the scoring with solo runs in the seventh and eighth innings on a RBI single by Pregno and a bases load walk by freshman outfielder Nick Core, respectively.

Pregno finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI while Joiner went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs scored and a RBI.

Despite the loss for the Lightning, Villante finished 4-for-5 with a homerun, a double, two singles, two runs scored, and two runs driven in. Lopez also had a great day at the dish as he picked up three hits, including a triple and two singles while scoring a run and driving in one, and Arvelo also tripled, singled twice, scored a run, and drove in a run.

 

The Lightning will return to action on Friday evening as Lehman will battle Ramapo College in a non-conference game, with first-pitch scheduled for 6:00pm. Prior to the game, four-year seniors Amadoernesto Guzman, Matthew Arvelo, and Jason Caraballo will be honored with commemorative framed jerseys to recognize their four years of dedicated service to the Lehman College baseball team.
