The Lehman College baseball team (7-22 Overall, 3-7 CUNYAC) recorded a doubleheader sweep Tuesday afternoon, defeating the City College of New York Beavers (4-33 Overall, 1-9 CUNYAC) by scores of 3-2 and 9-5 at the South Field in the Bronx.
Game one pitted Lehman's Emmanuel Vera against CCNY's Taylor Schomann. The contest turned out to be a pitcher's duel, with both hurlers working through some jams to keep both offenses at bay. In the end, it would be Vera recording the win as he hurled a seven-inning complete game, allowing two runs (earned) on five hits while striking out 11. Schomann took the loss while also going a complete game, as he hurled six innings plus and allowed three runs (all earned) on six hits while walking two and striking out four.
After both teams failed to score in the first three innings, the Beavers got on the board with two runs in the top of the fourth inning thanks to a pair of RBI singles by Rich Santiago and Paul Rojas. Lehman would eventually tie the score in the bottom of the fifth inning by plating two thanks to an Andrew Rosario RBI triple and a Gilbert Garcia RBI double. After five innings of play, the game was tied 2-2.
Lehman would win the game in the bottom of the seventh. Ignacio Rodiguez would start the inning by getting hit by a pitch and then, after he stole second base (his second stolen base of the game), Bobby Villante hit an RBI double to right field to win the game.
Offensively for Lehman in game one, Amadoernesto Guzman went 2-or-2 with a double, and Garcia, Villante, and Jason Caraballo all recorded a double apiece. For CCNY, Santiago finished 2-for-3 with a pair of singles, a run scored, and an RBI.
Game two featured Lehman's Adam Kolinoski and the Beavers' Kemil Nunez. Kolinoski, pitching perhaps for the final time in a Lehman uniform, picked up the victory, as he hurled six innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits while walking three and striking out 11. The key moment in the game came in the top of the sixth inning when, with CCNY having the bases loaded and one out down 7-5, Kolinoski bared down and recorded consecutive strikeouts to escape trouble. Nunez took the loss for CCNY, hurling five innings and allowing nine runs (six earned) on seven hits while walking two and striking out five.
The Lightning, trailing 3-1, took the lead for good in the bottom of the third inning thanks to five runs in a frame that was highlighted by an RBI single by Guzman and a two-RBI triple by Villante.
For Lehman College offensively in the second game, Guzman and Rosario tallied two singles apiece, and Villante, in addition to a hitting a triple, scoring a run and drove in two. William Rivera finished 1-for-2 with a run scored, an RBI, and a walk.
Emmanuel Vera pitched the final inning for the Lightning, allowing no runs, hits, or walks while striking out one.
Lehman will return to action Sunday afternoon as the team takes on Polytechnic University in a non-conference game at the South Field, with first pitch scheduled for noon.
