The Lehman College baseball team (10-21 Overall, 3-9 CUNYAC) picked up a pair of non-conference victories on Wednesday evening, defeating the Maccabees of Yeshiva University by scores of 11-0 and 16-2 at the South Field in the Bronx. The Lightning, playing the game on their home field, played as the road teams in the games.
In game one of the evening, Francisco Sanchez pitched a complete game shutout, pitching seven innings and allowing just four hits while walking one batter and striking out three. Yeshiva University's Davis Kesselman took the loss by tossing five innings and allowing 10 runs (eight earned) on 10 hits while walking three and striking out seven.
Offensively for the Lightning in Lehman College's game one victory, Amadoernesto Guzman finished 3-for-4 with a double, a pair of singles, two runs scored, and a run driven in. Raul Cordero homered, scored two runs and picked up an RBI, and George Flores hit a homerun, singled, dented home plate twice and drove in three. Matthew Arvelo singled, scored two runs, walked twice, drove in a run, and stole a base.
In the game two win for the Lightning, Jason Caraballo pitched one of his strongest games of the year – pitching a complete game (seven innings) and allowing just two runs (earned) on five walks while whiffing 11 batters. The Maccabees' Howard Avner started and hurled 2.1 innings, allowing eight runs (only one earned) on five hits while walking three and striking out two.
At the dish for Lehman in the nightcap, Jhon Comas Disla doubled twice, finished 4-for-5, scored three runs, and drove in a run. Guzman continued where he left off in game one as he went 2-for-5, homered, singled, scored two runs, and picked up two RBI's. Raul Cordero doubled twice, singled, scored two runs, and drove in three runs, and Bobby Villante singled, doubled, and scored a run.
Despite the loss for Yeshiva University in game two, Jeremy Schwartz doubled twice, finished 2-for-3, scored a run, and drove in a run. Adam Volk singled twice, drove in a run, and stole a base.
The Lightning will finish their season on Friday, May 7th with a non-conference single game against Wesley, with game-time scheduled for 1:00pm. Prior to the game, the Lehman College athletic department will honor four-year seniors Jason Caraballo, Matthew Arvelo, and Amadoernesto Guzman with commemorative framed jerseys.
