The Lehman College baseball team (3-9 Overall, 1-3 CUNYAC) dropped a pair of conference contests Saturday afternoon, falling to the CSI Dolphins (8-6 Overall, 2-0 CUNYAC) by scores of 3-2 and 12-2 at the CSI Baseball Complex in Staten Island, NY.
Game one was a scoreless, nail-biting affair until the sixth inning when first-year Lightning standout Bobby Villante drove home the first run of the game by hitting an RBI double off of CSI starter Jon Reyes and driving in William Rivera to give his team a 1-0 advantage. The Dolphins struck back in the bottom of the sixth inning with two runs off of Lehman hurler Emmanuel Vera thanks to a two-RBI single by CSI's Sal Todardo. After six innings of play, CSI led 2-1.
The top of the seventh started when Andrew Rosario drew a walk. Rosario made his way around the bases via a CSI error and a ground out by George Flores, respectively. Leonardo Hernandez then got up and smashed a single, allowing Rosario to score the tying run. The Lightning would fail to score again in the frame, as the game headed to the bottom of the seventh inning all knotted at two runs apiece.
Henry Roman led off for the Dolphins with a single. Steve Hession then reached on a fielder's choice while Roman was forced out at second base. Devon DiCasoli then drew a walk, and both Hession and DiCasoli advanced a base thanks to a passed ball. Pat Gale was intentionally walked, bringing Ryan Nemoyten up to the plate with the bases loaded and one man out. Nemoyten would be hit by a pitch by Vera, allowing Hession to cross the plate to and score the game winning run for CSI.
Jon Reyes took the win for the Dolphins, pitching a complete game allowing just five hits and one walk while fanning six. Offensively for the Dolphins, DiCasoli finished 2-for-2 with a run scored and two stolen bases. Emmanuel Vera took the loss for the Lightning despite pitching well, as he allowed three runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings while walking three and striking out four. At the dish for Lehman in game one, Villante finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.
CSI opened the second game with a six run first inning. The Dolphins scored on three hits and two errors by the Lightning, and the inning was highlighted by Roman's two-RBI single to right field. In the second inning, the Dolphins scored another run with the help of Mike Madalone's RBI single. Lehman got on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning with a two-RBI single by Raul Cordero putting the score at 7-2, still in CSI's hands.
The Dolphins tallied four consecutive hits scoring four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Hession singled to center followed by DiCasoli's double to right field. Gale doubled to right center scoring both Hession and DiCasoli. Tom DiPietro followed with a two run homerun, his fourth of the season. After a pitching switch by the Lightning in the fourth, CSI scored their final run of the game on single by Hession to score Mark Glennerster.
CSI's Pat Gale took the win on the pitching side facing 27 batters and striking out 11. Offensively for the Dolphins, Hession finished 4-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI's. Gilbert Garcia took the loss for Lehman, hurling three innings and allowing 11 runs (all earned) on eight hits while walking two and striking out two. At the dish for Lehman College, Vera and Garcia tallied two hits apiece.
The Lightning and Dolphins will close out their three-game series with a non-conference contest tomorrow at the South Field at Lehman College, with game-time scheduled for 1:00pm.
