The Lehman College baseball team (3-14 Overall, 1-5 CUNYAC) dropped a pair of CUNYAC games to the John Jay College Bloodhounds (6-17 Overall, 4-2 CUNYAC) by scores of 5-2 and 11-3 Sunday afternoon at the South Field in the Bronx.
Game one's pitching match-up featured John Jay's Michael Colletta taking on Lehman College ace Emmanuel Vera. The Bloodhounds got out to a quick start in the contest, plating a run against Vera when with runners on first and third and no men out, John Massoni hit a ground ball to second base that went under the glove of Lightning second baseman Angel Ramos and into right field. Edwin Hernandez scored on that play giving John Jay an early 1-0 advantage. Vera would hold the Bloodhounds at bay for the remainder of the inning, however.
The Lightning posed a threat in the bottom of the first when with one out, Bobby Villante, Gilbert Garcia, and Amadoernesto Guzman recorded back-to-back-to-back singles against Colletta, loading the bases. That brought up Andrew Rosario who would strike out swinging, and with two outs, Matthew Arvelo struck out looking to end the threat.
The Bloodhounds would add another run in the top of the second inning thanks to a solo homerun to right field by Johan Abad. Lehman didn't score in the bottom of the frame, and the Bloodhounds held a 2-0 lead after two innings of play. After Vera held John Jay in check by pitching a scoreless third inning, Lehman again loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the third, but the poised Colletta got Arvelo to ground into a 4-6-3 double play to end the threat.
John Jay extended its lead to 4-0 in the top of the fourth inning, plating a pair of runs thanks to two base hits, two errors, a hit-batsman, and a passed ball. The Lightning finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning when Angel Ramos' two-out RBI single brought home George Flores. After four innings, the Bloodhounds led 4-1.
John Jay's Jason Witten hit a solo homerun to right-center field in the top of the fifth to balloon the Bloodhounds' lead to 5-1. That score would remain the same until the bottom of the seventh inning, when, down to their final two outs, the Lightning staged a late rally. Garcia was hit by a pitch to start things, and Guzman hit a ground-rule double to right field, putting runners on second and third with one out. Rosario would then hit a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing home Garcia, and Lehman found themselves down 5-2, one walk or hit away from bringing the tying run to the plate. Arvelo, however, would fly out to left field, ending the Lightning's threat and the game.
Colletta picked up the victory for John Jay, tossing a complete game and allowing two runs (both earned) on seven hits while walking four batters and striking out six. Offensively for the Bloodhounds, Witten finished 3-for-4 with a homerun, two runs scored, and an RBI. Offensively for Lehman, Guzman finished 2-for-4.
Game two of the afternoon saw John Jay ace John Massoni taking on Lehman southpaw Adam Kolinoski. The Bloodhounds, just as they did in the first game of the day, took a 1-0 lead after half an inning of play thanks to an infield RBI two-out single by Xavier Perez. Lehman answered with two runs off of Massoni in the bottom of the frame when Garcia hit a sacrifice fly and Rosario recorded an RBI single. After one inning of play, the Lightning led 2-1.
John Jay would answer in the top of the second inning with five runs off of Kolinoski, an inning that was highlighted by five Bloodhound hits, including a double by Abad, singles by Steven Kendrick and Benjamin Beiro, a double by James Podlucky and a single by Perez. After an inning and a half of play, the Bloodhounds held a 6-2 advantage. Lehman got one back in the bottom of the second inning when Garcia drew a two-out, bases loaded walk, bringing home Jose Santiago.
With a 6-3 lead, John Jay plated an additional run in the top of the third inning thanks to an RBI single by Beiro. From there, Bloodhound hurler Massoni took over. He would finish the game, and in his final five innings pitched, he would allow just three hits while striking out 10. Kolinoski settled down somewhat as well, pitching three scoreless innings in the fourth, fifth, and sixth before yielding four runs in the top of the seventh, accounting for the 11-3 final score.
