The Lehman College baseball team (5-22 Overall, 1-7 CUNYAC) dropped a pair of non-conference games on Senior Day, falling to the SUNY New Paltz Hawks (11-24 Overall, 3-9 SUNYAC) by scores of 6-5 and 6-1 Sunday afternoon at the South Field in the Bronx.
Prior to the game, the Lehman College athletic department took a few moments to honor four seniors – Emmanuel Vera, Adam Kolinoski, Angel Ramos, and William Rivera – for their years of dedication and service to the baseball program. Each senior was presented with a commemorative plaque on behalf of Athletic Director Dr. Martin L. Zwiren as a show of appreciation for their efforts.
The pitching match-up in game one featured Brian Cubero for Lehman College and Brett Harrison for SUNY New Paltz. In a pitchers duel, Harrison was able to pick up the victory, hurling a complete game and allowing five runs (all earned) on five hits while walking three and striking out a whopping 13 batters. Cubero kept his team in the game, going the distance and taking the loss, allowing six runs (all earned) on eight hits while walking six batters and striking out three.
Tyler Terlecky doubled in two runs for the Hawks in the top of the third inning to give his team a 2-0 lead, but the Lightning responded in the bottom of the frame with two runs to tie the score. The Hawks would then score a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings while Lehman was held scoreless in those frames. After five innings of play, SUNY New Paltz led 4-2.
The Hawks would then plate two important insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning. Michael Marash tripled home a run with nobody out, and then he came home when Cubero misplayed Mike Sherlock's bunt. After five and a half innings, Lehman trailed 6-2. The Lightning scored one run in the bottom of the sixth thanks to an RBI double by Vera.
After SUNY New Paltz failed to score in the top of the seventh inning, Lehman made things interesting in the ninth, putting runners on second and third with one out. After Gilbert Garcia struck out looking, Amadoernesto Guzman hit a two-RBI double to center field to pull Lehman to within one run. Raul Cordero would then strike out to end the game.
For SUNY New Paltz offensively in game one, Paul Merola finished 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Marsh finished 2-for-2 with a triple, a run scored, and an RBI, and Terlecky doubled and drove home two runs. Clinton Boettcher finished 1-for-2 with a homerun. For Lehman College, Guzman finished 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI's, and Andrew Rosario went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
Game two of the afternoon featured SUNY New Paltz' John Guiliano taking on Lehman's Francisco Sanchez. Guiliano picked up the victory, hurling five innings and allowing one run (earned) on five hits while striking out seven. Sanchez took the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits while walking two and striking out five. A bright spot for Lehman saw Jason Caraballo hurl two scoreless innings while not allowing a hit and striking out two.
Michael Marash finished 2-for-3 for SUNY New Paltz in the game two victory. Rosario recorded two more hits for Lehman College despite the loss.
The Lightning will return to action Tuesday afternoon as the team takes on the City College of New York Beavers in a CUNYAC doubleheader, with the first game scheduled for 2:00pm.
